Guatemala Team Update #2

Day #2

Today started with Pastor John leading us in devotions from Acts 17:22-27.  We discussed the importance of immersing ourselves into the culture to have touch points which will lead to moments to share the gospel. So our day’s goal was to do just that- immerse ourselves into the Guatemala culture and experience God’s creation around them.

We traveled to Antigua- which is the Old Capital City. We all enjoyed our interpreters teaching us tons of information during our drive and soaked in the many sites. Due to a festival in town, we had to do a lot of walking- which helped us fully site see this old city.   We toured an old convent and were fascinated by all we saw. It was interesting to see the younger members of our team asking many questions and trying to wrap their minds around being their current age and living there. A definite eye opening experience!

We saw amazing sites because of the festival and then feasted at good ol’ McDonald’s!  Yet this is not a McDonald’s you would see in the states- so nice and so fancy!

We then had the opportunity to be with our translators in the market purchasing souvenirs.  It was an awesome experience for our team to be conversing with the Guatemalans, see their shops, and truly be in their culture.

Then we started the trek to the village we will be in for the rest of the week. When we asked our interpreters how long the drive would be- they said ABOUT 3 hours- with a smirk on their face. We knew to be ready for a long drive. During this drive, we learned why they call this is the rainy season for Guatemala- so much rain, and lightening. So thankful for the Lord’s protection on us while traveling.

We had a delicious dinner at our hotel, unpacked and settled into our rooms for the night.  Excited to see what God has in store tomorrow- but ready to get a night’s rest first!

As we reflect tonight on our day- we think back to Pastor John’s devotional this morning for our team and for our church body at home lifting us up in prayer. How can each one of us on this trip (and at home) create a pathway for gospel proclamation? God has no needs, He doesn’t need us- yet, He wants us. This just shows how His desire for us is so strong. He is not far from us, He wants us to seek Him and then worship Him.

Pray for our team’s individual hearts to be seeing God’s creation here in Guatemala, to be seeking Him, to be worshipping Him, and to be proclaiming His gospel in whatever pathway the Lord opens for us.
